Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Evacuations Reported

The island nation has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities reported that the powerful weather system caused extensive sudden floods, storm surges, mudslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, prompting the evacuation of millions of people nationwide.

Widespread Damage and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, emergency crews recorded floodwaters reaching the tops of houses and homes washed out by the powerful currents.

Our team saved 14 individuals who were trapped atop a house engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. One resident also called in panic, reporting the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We rescued him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, officials confirmed two fatalities: one from drowning on the island and a second individual killed after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The super typhoon weakened to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning as it crossed the main island, home to the national capital.

Per the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts peaked at over 170 mph.

The storm system is projected to lose strength as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service indicated efforts were ongoing to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed at least 224 people with dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for the missing persons were halted recently due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is making tropical storms more intense and frequent. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Scientists have found that the frequency of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has risen by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

Global assessments suggest that severe weather events cause an average of US$3.5 million in losses to the country every year.

The nation’s leader issued an emergency declaration last week due to the severe damage caused by the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
